Our first Rockland BOCES “MOVER of the Month” (February) of 2022 is Liam Fernandez from the Jesse J. Kaplan School! Liam joined our BOCES family in September and we could not be more proud of his progress.
Liam is learning to sit independently for short periods of time with close supervision. He enjoys reaching for and playing with his adapted toys while propped over a wedge, which helps to strengthen Liam’s trunk and neck. Liam’s frequent visits to the newly-constructed sensory wall bring him so much joy during the school day. “It was created by a group of professionals working in the occupational, physical and speech therapy departments,” said Physical Therapist Kristin Mullen. “Students have the opportunity to work on various skills and activities. It has been such a blessing for Liam and all of our learners.” Keep up the great work!
Kaplan’s MOVE™ (Mobility Opportunities via Education) program combines therapy and education to teach children with physical disabilities and complex needs the functional skills of sitting, standing and walking. MOVE™ aims to give children an opportunity to lead more independent and fulfilling lives. Every child deserves the right to MOVE™.
