Congratulations to Oliver Pierre, our Rockland BOCES Jesse J. Kaplan School “MOVER of the Month” for April! When Oliver first came to Kaplan, he could only take a few steps and would mainly get around on his knees. Through the use of a gait trainer, he is able to stand up and move throughout the building.
With the support of his classroom teacher Joan Tisbe and physical therapist Lori Guarascio, Oliver can also bear weight on his feet and walk from his desk to the changing area. “Just recently, we have seen Oliver get up out of his chair all on his own and take a few steps,” said Lori. “It has been a long time since he has done that. Oliver has gotten stronger, works hard and we are very happy with his progress.” Keep up the great work!
Kaplan’s MOVE™ (Mobility Opportunities via Education) program combines therapy and education to teach children with physical disabilities and complex needs the functional skills of sitting, standing and walking. MOVE™ aims to give children an opportunity to lead more independent and fulfilling lives. Every child deserves the right to MOVE™.
