Congratulations to Gabriella “Gabby” Fenfert – our first Rockland BOCES “MOVER of the Month” (November) for the 2022-23 academic year! When Gabriella first came to the Jesse J. Kaplan School at age five, she was still learning how to walk. Not only can Gabby now (age seven) get around with the help of a posterior walker, she also frequently requests to get up and walk!
Gabriella is eager to use her newfound independence throughout the school day. With her walker, she is able to attend specials, join kids on the playground and go on class errands. Gabby also uses a prone stander during classroom activities and compass chair to sit at her desk. “Gabriella is given every opportunity to walk throughout the day, which is the biggest part of the MOVE program,” said Physical Therapist Kristin Mullen. “It is important for Gabby to be able to participate in all of her activities in a way that makes her feel proud and strong. If you watch her walk, you can see how happy she is with her progress.” Keep up the great work!
Kaplan’s MOVE™ (Mobility Opportunities via Education) program combines therapy and education to teach children with physical disabilities and complex needs the functional skills of sitting, standing and walking. MOVE™ aims to give children an opportunity to lead more independent and fulfilling lives. Every child deserves the right to MOVE™.
